Climate change, global warming, greenhouse gases, and emissions have received serious attention from the world through the Kyoto Protocol, Paris Climate Agreement, and Net Zero Emission. The government has also made a National Policy that massively encourages emission reduction through the use of new and renewable energy and electric vehicle development programs as well as the government’s Net Zero Emission 2060 program.
As a form of contribution in the field of Energy and Climate Change and participation in the UI Green Metrics ranking, Telkom University officially established the Center of Excellence Sustainable Energy and Climate Change (CoE SERG) on December 21, 2022.
The formation of CoE SERG was initiated by several lecturers with cross-science, expertise groups, study programs, and faculties. Chaired by Dr. Ir. Jangkung Raharjo, M.T., currently CoE SERG involves lecturers and students from various study programs at Telkom University….
“The target of SERG every year is to be able to produce outputs in the form of journals, proceedings, patents, books, and innovative products to overcome national energy problems, and help realize national energy security. CoE SERG also targets to produce policy briefs and academics related to energy,” said Jangkung.
CoE SERG acts as an interdisciplinary group of scientific collaborative research in the context of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and power economy, which has several objectives. First, CoE SERG aims to increase the capacity of renewable energy on campus. Second, to create appropriate technology to increase the percentage of renewable energy and energy use efficiency. Third, contribute to the nation through proposed regulations to increase the use of renewable energy in Indonesia. Finally, increasing collaboration with researchers or research teams from within and outside the country to increase opportunities to obtain domestic and foreign grants.
To realize its goal, CoE SERG develops several innovation products, including: Berdikari Energi 4.1, implementation of battery test laboratory and battery management system, biogas power plant, hydrogen storage, and internet of energy.
The innovation of Berdikari Energi 4.1 integrates several renewable energy sources, namely Solar Power Plant (PLTS), Wind Power Plant (PLT Bayu), Biogas Power Plant (PLT Biogas), and Hydrogen Power Plant.
This Berdikari Energi 4.1 innovation research is a collaboration program with the National Research & Innovation Agency (BRIN) with funding obtained from the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP), and involves lecturers and students in its implementation.
In addition to developing innovative products, CoE SERG is also actively conducting various other activities such as research, community service, training in the development of renewable energy sources, developing cooperation between campus, industry, and government, and many more. These activities are carried out within the scope of climate change, hybrid generation, renewable energy, new energy, storage, net zero emission, smart grid, internet of energy, electric vehicles, and energy regulation.
With the program and scope of SERG activities that are relevant to national policies and global issues, the presence of CoE SERG is expected to be able to be useful for producing innovation products and development research in the field of sustainable energy and energy security needed by the community.
In the future, CoE SERG also hopes to become a Center of Excellence that is able to make a national contribution and make the energy field one of Telkom University’s flagships. In addition, the test laboratory currently being developed by CoE SERG together with the Energy Systems Engineering S1 Study Program is expected to be a source of NTF (Non-tuition Fee) at Telkom University.
