Education on NPK Nutrient Application in Soil with Kismo Mulyo V Farmer Group

Jumapolo is a sub-district in Karanganyar Regency, Central Java, located at 250 meters above sea level. In this area, there is a farmer group called Kismo Mulyo V. This farmer group is led by Mr. Seman and consists of dozens of farmers with various fields of cultivation. Some grow soybeans, rice, tubers, and various other types of plants.

All farmers certainly hope to produce fertile crops with as much production as possible for their welfare. One way to do this is through fertilization. Fertilization can help the nutritional adequacy of plants so that they can grow optimally. However, improper dosage of fertilization will certainly be a problem. If it is too little, the plants will be inhibited in their development so that they do not grow optimally. Even if too much, it will cause residue for the surrounding soil which in turn will cause pollution and soil damage.

Based on these problems, a team of lecturers from Telkom University organized a community service activity with target community partners, namely the Kismo Mulyo V farmer group in Jumapolo. The team was led by Faisal Candrasyah Hasibuan, S.T., M.T. from S1 Computer Engineering Study Program, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and consisted of Dr. Doan Perdana from Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Dr. Kemas Muslim L. from Faculty of Informatics. In addition to lecturers, several students were also involved in this activity. Some of the students involved were Misbahul Khoirurozikin, Cecep Hasim As’ari, and Loviona Fortuna Putri. This activity is carried out so that farmers know a way to give the right level of fertilizer. Not only the time of fertilizer application, but also the type of nutrients from the fertilizer given, such as Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK). It even includes soil moisture and pH levels to know and monitor the wet-dry and acid-base conditions of the soil. A socialization activity was given to the Kismo Mulyo V farmer group so that farmers are aware of the importance of nutrients to plants and the correct dosage of fertilizers so that not much fertilizer is wasted and ends up polluting the soil. Education was also given to the farmer group about an application that can provide information about NPK levels, moisture, and soil pH to help farmers decide on the dosage and timing of fertilizers.

From the activities that have been carried out in the fourth quarter of 2022, farmers are very enthusiastic about the existence of applications and devices that can determine the level of NPK nutrients in the soil. During this time, farmers only guessed at giving fertilizer doses based on experience and habits without a definite basis. Farmers also just found out that excessive doses of fertilizer will cause residue and damage the environment in the long run. The Kismo Mulyo V farmer group has learned many things. Moreover, they can’t wait for the application and tools to be used in the field on a daily basis. Reseacrh.
