Telkom University Students Hack Cultural Crisis Through “Suarakan APIK” Campaign

Students of Communication Science, Telkom University, 2020 are mandated by the campus to do an annual project that goes directly to the community. Every university assigns students to go directly to the community through KKN (real work lectures).

However, the Telkom University campus has its own uniqueness where KKN is diverted to Urban Village activities which aim to rebrand selected villages in West Java. In 2022, Urban Village raised the tourism village and the theme of sustainable tourism.

Sustainable tourism is a sustainable tourism development program in economic sustainability, natural preservation, and socio-cultural sustainability.

There are twelve sustainable tourism goals that must be applied to tourist villages, one of which is visitor fulfillment.

Visitor fulfillment is providing experiences to visitors by exchanging knowledge related to tourism activities.

The urban village theme is very relevant to one of the tourist villages that has implemented visitor fulfillment goals, namely Lebakmuncang Village in Ciwidey, Bandung Regency.

This village was represented by Apik’Uncang Village students and they raised a traditional musical instrument typical of Lebakmuncang, namely bangkong reang.

Bangkong reang itself is one type of traditional musical instrument that comes from the life of the village community because most of them are farmers.

are mostly farmers.

Telkom University students, especially Apik’Uncang Village, raised their cultural potential as a form of effort to minimize the rampant cultural crisis and they realized that young people today have been hypnotized by western culture which has resulted in Indonesian local culture almost being slowly eroded and even claimed by foreign countries.

They are very itchy to preserve local culture in Indonesia, especially traditional musical instruments whose popularity is clearly outmatched by western music.
The popularity of traditional musical instruments is clearly outmatched by western music which has begun to intensify the hearts of young people in Indonesia.

On this basis, they began to launch offline campaign activities in the form of socialization on (14/11/22) with the theme Suarakan APIK.

This activity became a pre-event event before heading to the Urban Village main event at the Faculty of Communication and Business, Telkom University.

The socialization of Suarakan APIK was successfully echoed on Tuesday (11/14/22) to Wednesday (11/30/22) which was packaged in an interesting and unique way with the concept of socialization to SMA / SMK in Bandung which could introduce and educate teachers and students about bangkong reang musical instruments.

Then, the Suarakan APIK tagline is a variety of strains because it is considered a representation of the art of bangkong reang, which has six different tones, namely da, mi, na, ti, la, and da.

Meanwhile, one goal means only focusing on one goal.

“Suarakan APIK is taken from two words, SUARA and APIK. The sound diction is adapted to our focus on Bangkong Reang where this tool can produce a unique sound. Then, the second diction APIK comes from our village branding, Lebakmuncang Village,” explained Martina Kusuma, Project Manager of Apik’Uncang Village.

“The purpose of this campaign is to increase the awareness of teenagers, especially those aged 15 to 18 years old to high schools in Bandung about the existence of bangkong reang itself,” she added.

To expand the target audience of the Suarakan APIK campaign, they again launched a new activity that is still one theme with the socialization campaign so that it remains focused on its main objectives.

The difference is that this activity involves more of the general public in various circles who can see and provide new experiences as well as invite the let’s get to know bangkong reang movement.

Other activities included parades, performances, and booth exhibitions. The parade involved eight classes that already had their own focus to highlight the potential of their respective villages.

Meanwhile, the performances performed by all classes have been considered to be iconic of their respective villages and have a great opportunity to be seen by the general public from various circles.

“The performance presented by Apik’Uncang Village will collaborate traditional musical instruments with various modern Indonesian songs and also acoustic musical instruments which are still in accordance with the objectives of the Apik’Uncang campaign, namely introducing bangkong reang to the general public so that this performance can be seen how the shape and sound of the bangkong reang itself directly,” he said.
reang itself directly,” he explained.

“The performance will actually be more effective for us to be able to introduce bangkong reang to the general public in a unique and interesting way,” he said.

Furthermore, the booth exhibition will be adjusted to the representation of Lebakmuncang Village as well as the booth concept, namely APIK (Asri Pemandangan Indah Kahuripan) because here they package the booth display by providing many plants to be environmentally friendly and visitors can also feel the sensation of cool air directly.

In addition to being attractively packaged, the reason they gave the booth concept was to further emphasize the bangkong reang musical instrument as the iconic Apik’Unc village.
as an icon of Apik’Uncang Village so that it can attract many visitors to come to the booth.

All of these activities are still included in the Suarakan APIK campaign series from Apik’Uncang Village during the pre-event one before the Urban Village peak event on Saturday, (7/1/23).

This pre-event event coincided with the Urban Village organization committee campaign and seven other classes. Research
